destination photography: germany on film

this is officially my first film blog post.  on my recent trip to germany i took pop’s film camera, and loved it.  the experience of taking a photo and having to wait 3 weeks to see it is… frustrating… unnerving… and (finally) so rewarding.  the camera is an argus 21 (version 1) markfinder (no rangefinder here) manufactured between 1947-1952.   Pop bought it brand new from the store, and it was passed to me a couple of years ago.  i immediately had it repaired, but until this trip it mostly acted as decoration. I was shooting on Fujifilm neopan 100 acros film, and had it developed at E6 labs in atlanta.  i was astonished with the results from the 64 year old camera, and will be using pop’s camera on a much more regular basis.

here are a few of my favorites.

travel photography: germany

^view from the hotel room.  frankfurt is germany’s only city that allows skyscrapers.^

the next few photos were taken in the shopping district which is Germany’s “5th avenue” in “MAINhatten” (nicknamed for the Main River)

^this dude started chasing me trying to get money for taking his photo with his mini horse.  his sign translates roughly to: Circus Kramani, thanks for the feed donation for 30 circus animals.^

^this photo will be hanging on my wall soon.^

^there are thousands of locks on this bridge with couples’ names engraved or written on them.  the only other time i have seen something like this is at the great wall of china.^

^this is probably my favorite photo that I have taken so far on this trip; it’s a wall hanger also.^

^the frankfurter is kind of a big deal in frankfurt.  i don’t know how many meals i had that were sausage, potatoes, sauerkraut, and beer.  within 1 day of coming home I was already craving german food.^

^i checked out the museum of modern art, and got to see some of andy warhol’s work.  not what i was expecting in frankfurt.^
^this was the first attempt at taking the photo below, long exposure, no tripod, camera moves, and photog just started waving it around in frustration^
^i headed back to the mall to do some people watching… i wanted you to have a feel for the people^
^this dude has crutches strapped to his backpack… impressive^
^if you cannot afford housing the gov’t will pick up the tab, so there are no homeless… just wannabes^
^the red bowl is his food bowl, the yellow is for charity.  i never got the impression this dog had it rough.^
^another mini horse on display…^
^this bmw was parallel parked between 2 other cars, and was swiftly lifted onto the back of the truck.^
^i made some friends at this “art supply store”.  you can check out some of klark kent’s (on the left) work at www.klarkkent.de.^
^here is one of klark’s pieces in downtown frankfurt… it spells kent^
^this was an ancient fortress that is now one of the best damn restaurants in frankfurt^
^germany has tons of street art, that is about as bad as crime gets.  ironically this is the side of an old prison.^
^this smart car just gave the middle finger to the jag and bmw that didn’t leave enough room for another car^
^lufthansa airlines had a big party during their strike, and we got to see a free concert.  we were not worried, we flew delta.^
^frankfurt is a large banking center in germany, so of course “occupy bankfurt” was there^
^these guys were all set.  tepee, check. fireplace, check. coat rack, check. today’s newspaper, check. recliner, check. mini trampoline, check. job, nah.^
^it’s time to leave frankfurt and head to aachen^
^the art is impressive, and so are all of the holes in the wall.^
^it is hard to tell from this small image, but this is a combination of 54 individual images.  each of 18 pano shots were first HDR (3 shots 2 ev apart) then stitched together^
^a rainy night in aachen.  this is their town hall^
^i experimented quite a bit this trip with my “pop’s” film camera, i will post some when I get the film back^
^we took a day trip through 3 countries.  we made a stop in malmedy.  you WWII buffs may be familiar with this area.^
^the three photos above were not taken with the film camera.  this is an infrared lens on my main camera^
^windfarm in netherlands^
^downtown burssels, belgium^
^the Autobahn was even cooler than i expected.  i promise this is the fastest we went…ish (176 kph = 109 mph)^
^it’s crazy to think that 67 years to the day my grandfather was standing in this same place watching all hell break loose, and thanks to him I can sit here and enjoy a beer.  i just wish he was sitting across the table with a beer of his own.^
^taken from the tower of the Bridge at Remagen (former)^
^Rhine river^
^i’m a big fan of chuck close’s paintings.  this was on the side of a museum in frankfurt^

atlanta photography: ATL skyline @ sunset

after being cooped up inside all day yesterday by the thunderstorms; i had to get out when the skies parted.  i have seen countless photos from this bridge over freedom parkway, but have never shot there myself.  as i suspected I was not the only photog on the bridge.  i was really hoping for some cool looking clouds (since it had stormed all day), but the sky was absolutely clear.  it was not exactly what i expecting, but i’m really happy with the results.

(above image: shot infrared filter + 3 2-stop HDR -> black+white) – this was taken before the streetlights were on

gallery wrap – atlanta wedding photography

what is a gallery wrap?  this is one of our most popular wedding options.  a gallery wrap is a photo from your wedding printed on canvas, and stretched around a wooden frame.  this example is 16in x 24 in, and 3/4in deep with a wire hanger.  it is your own piece of custom art that is sure to impress family + friends, and be a artful reminder of your wedding day.
